King Edward VI Grammar School Chelmsford

German

A level languages at KEGS? To sum it up in a few words, it’s about so much more than just becoming fluent and confident in German or French. You will discover the cultural, political and social history of the German speaking world; you will cast a critical eye over the more recent events and scientific developments in the German speaking societies of Austria, Switzerland and Germany itself of course; you will learn how to analyse and discuss German film and literature, all in the target language. All lessons are conducted predominantly in German, and you will learn how to frame your own ideas in the target language, both through in-class assessments, presentations, and in small conversation groups with one of our German native-speakers. You will also have the chance to research an area of interest to you in far more depth in preparation for the A level speaking examination. We follow the Pearson course, which is examined through two written exams and one speaking assessment. Interim assessments make use of online resources linked closely to the course. Language graduates and those with strong language skills will continue to be in high demand, earning a significant premium compared to many graduates in other disciplines, due to the intellectual and academic rigour studying a language brings, as well as providing you with a set of real practical language skills for the workplace and life.

Year 13 students Lena and Alex introduce you to the world of German at KEGS in the short film below.
