King Edward VI Grammar School Chelmsford

How to Apply

Making an application for a place at KEGS in Year 7

There are two forms that you will need to complete to apply for a place at KEGS.

Firstly, you have to register your son to take the 11+ exam.  This is done by registering with the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) who manage the 11+ process in Essex. To register and complete the online form please go to  www.csse.org.uk.

Secondly, all parents/carers living in Essex must apply to Essex County Council School Admissions for their preferred secondary schools. Their online form is the only way you can apply for a secondary school place for your child. Please go to the Essex County Council website for full details.

Parents living outside of Essex must apply to their own local education authority, giving King Edward VI Grammar School as one of their choices.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT COMPLETING THE CSSE 11+ REGISTRATION FORM ON ITS OWN IS NOT AN APPLICATION.

Making an application for a place at KEGS in Years 8-11

We are currently fully subscribed in all year groups and it is rare for students to leave KEGS before the end of Year 13.  In each of the last three academic years, for example, two students in total out of the 750 students in Years 8-11 during that period left before they reached the end of Year 11.  Even if a child does leave, the chance of them leaving from a particular year group is even smaller.  Although places rarely become available in Years 8-11, we do increase the size of our year groups when they reach the Sixth Form, making more places available at the start of Year 12.  If, though. you would like your child to be added to our waiting list for Years 8-11 please complete and return the In-Year Application Form.

In-year applications for places in these years will be tested if and when a place becomes available. Applicants at this stage are placed on our waiting list. Where an in-year vacancy does occur because of a student leaving the roll of the school, all applicants on the waiting list will be invited to sit a test set by the school. The test will not aim to replicate the 11+ Entrance Test but will seek to establish whether the applicant can sustain the pace of the school’s classroom education and fit both within the ability levels and the curriculum offered at the school.

There is a right to appeal.

If a number of applicants are tested at the same time for a place or places and results of the tests indicate that it is not possible to discriminate between the last two candidates qualifying for a place academically, the same criteria as are used for ties for the final place when admitting students to Year 7 will be used – please see the school’s Admission Policy.
