Headteacher’s Welcome

Welcome to KEGS. It is a real privilege to lead this outstanding school, with a rich history dating back to 1551, and roots even earlier. KEGS is proud to be one of England’s top state grammar schools, known not only for consistently excellent examination results, but also for its welcoming, inclusive community. We celebrate students from all backgrounds and are deeply committed to helping each young person discover and develop their unique talents, interests and ability to collaborate with others. Here, tradition meets innovation: we value respect, courtesy, and kindness alongside the latest educational research and practices.

As a school which is dedicated to nurturing highly able students, academic success is a core focus. Most of our students, whether joining us in Year 7 or in the Sixth Form, go on to study at leading universities. Our motivated students and passionate staff create a purposeful and supportive learning environment. This year, for example, 21 students progressed to Oxford or Cambridge, continuing a strong recent trend and consistent progression of our students to top universities. Many also pursue competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine. Whilst our results are impressive, we know that league tables don’t tell the whole story. We put great care into supporting and celebrating every student’s progress, especially those who face particular challenges, with mentoring and tailored guidance. It is also encouraging that many of our students who are entitled to the Government’s ‘pupil premium’ outperform their peers in terms of progress made since their arrival at KEGS.

Beyond academics, we are committed to developing well-rounded individuals with the confidence and resilience to embrace future challenges and opportunities in higher education, the workforce, and the wider world as thoughtful, capable leaders. Our wide range of extracurricular activities, trips, exchanges and community service opportunities means there’s something for everyone to enjoy and grow from. We are dedicated to promoting equality and respect, and our pastoral care system ensures every student feels supported and valued. Our goal is for every student to love coming to school; to enjoy their learning and to feel a true sense of belonging within the KEGS family. We are also proud of our strong partnerships with local schools and our ongoing role in the Chelmsford community.

Our school motto, “Quicquid agas sapiens age fortiter ex animoque” is understood today as “Whatever you do, do it thoughtfully, courageously, and wholeheartedly”, a spirit which guides everything we do here; students and staff alike.
