FOUNDING GOVERNORS
"On March 24th 1551 a royal warrant of Edward VI established a free grammar school in Chelmsford for the education, in the Anglican religion and classical languages, of the boys of the manor of Chelmsford and the hamlet of Moulsham. The endowments were entrusted to the care of three knights, Sir Walter Mildmay, Sir Henry Tyrrell and Sir Willliam Petre and their descendants." FOUNDATION GOVERNOR MEMBERSHIP
The Foundation Governors are responsible for assets which pre-date the school's incorporation as a state school and some acquired independently since. These include investments; land (the whole Broomfield Road site) and buildings (the 1892 building; the Music School; the new classroom block); some benefactions acquired down the generations which provide a variety of awards to pupils to promote further study, travel projects or reward excellence or public service; and the Bedford Playing Fields (opened in 1977). New buildings acquired through the 450th anniversary appeal are also owned by the Foundation. The Foundation nominates five of the eighteen Management Governor members although not necessarily from its own ranks. The Foundation is responsible to the Charity Commissioners for the care of its assets. The Headmaster is in attendance at all meetings.
