LEADING EDGE PARTNERSHIP

KEGS was awarded Leading Edge Status in July 2003 for a three year programme, which was renewed in January 2006. We are one of only 104 schools nationally, and only three in Essex, to have been awarded this accolade, from hundreds of applications. It is recognition of our current excellent work and practice at the school, and places us at the cutting edge of educational development and innovation nationally.

This partnership is based primarily in Chelmsford, and has gradually evolved over time, involving a substantial number of other schools at different points.  The original focus was on action research, and subsequent dissemination of results, in order to support the development of teaching and learning in each of the partner schools.  This involved articulating and developing ‘learning how to learn’, promoting inclusion, developing ‘learning based’ leadership models and looking at the impact of ICT on learning and staff working practices.  A substantial number of projects were undertaken, many of which were published in the “Learning Lessons” series which is available on the website.  Others have been the subject of presentations at educational conferences, one of which was held at KEGS in 2008.

As a result of SSAT guidelines, the partnership has recently elected to focus particularly on gifted and talented issues at KS3 and particularly KS4.  Apart from KEGS, the two other principal schools in the partnership are now St Peter’s College and the Boswells School, and in both cases research projects with a gifted and talented theme are ongoing.  There are other associate primary school partners with whom we are working, as well as a group of schools near Cambridge with whom we collaborate on educational research projects.  However within KEGS, we have also kept to our ideal of promoting action research projects undertaken by staff on a wide range of topics, and a number of these are currently taking place.  Thus through leading edge status, KEGS continues to function as a research engaged learning community, committed to a programme firmly embedded in classroom practice so that teaching and learning can be developed with active student involvement.
